I really love going on random and impulsive adventures. Especially when there is food involved.
One of my best friends from uni, Matt, has also moved up to Auckland recently and is keen to explore outside of the confines of downtown. I have wheels, he has enthusiasm, we both like eating. It is a friendship containing all the right components in my book.
This food adventure happened totally by chance. We were driving out to Muriwai beach just to have a gander when we passed The Tasting Shed whilst driving along state highway 16 in Kumeu. Having neither of us been before we decided that was definitely going to be a thing on the way back. We used to spend Tuesday afternoons in my fourth year in Dunedin at The Cook (may it's student bar glory be closed in peace) drinking cheap jugs and eating wedges. Oh so classy. Now that we are both employed and living in Auckland we seem to have adjusted out taste somewhat. Moving up in the world right?
The concept of The Tasting Shed is that you get small dishes of crazy flavour combinations to share with friends which I think is rather nifty. I love trying new things, what's the worst that could happen right!
So on the menu this afternoon were triple cooked potatoes with chilli, lemon, spring onion and coriander (so trying this at home!), lemon meringue waffle cones with lemon curd, lemon ice cream and crushed nerds (nerds! what!) and my favourite of all, the ricotta doughnuts with autumn fruits, vanilla syrup, goats milk and toasted oats.
The doughnuts were out of this world. Could have eaten those for the rest of my life.
So on Thursday we are back for 'Trust the Chef' night so who knows what will be served up to us! I'll let you know how it goes.
If you do find yourself there I hope you get served by the excellent young woman known as Caitlin. Good chats all around!
So get out there and get amongst all the treats Auckland has to offer.
