I was skeptical that the effort wouldn't be worth it. Hindsight is a glorious mistress and I am legit so glad I spent an hour and a half of my life in peak traffic trying to acquire orange blossom water.

I collect cookbooks. I love them. I love the pages and pages filled with possibilities and pretty pictures. I have about 40 of them. Excessive? Probably, but it doesn’t stop me wanting more. I remember learning in a food history paper I once took that we buy cookbooks because we are wooed by the lifestyle portrayed in them. Effortless entertaining, overflowing laughter and platter upon platter of the most delectable food. They give the idea that this author lives the most sociable and fabulous of lifestyles and is of course the most popular of all his or her friends.

The problem with making cakes is that you need people to eat them. My flatmates and I will get through maybe about a third of a cake max before we lose interest or fear our sugar intake has exceeded the yearly maximum to eat too much more. I got invited to a friend's 25th birthday gathering and leapt at the opportunity to celebrate with cake!

Happy 31st of May. It is a bittersweet day. As of tomorrow aka the first of June, I shall be giving up all things deemed to be junk food in the name of Junk Free June. Gasp!!! How is this possible??? Sophie, give up cake? And ice cream? No, not the ice cream!!!

But after a frustrating time at work, a pep talk from my Dad and discovering the best YouTube channel ever (search Anna Akana), I felt like I had a lot of thoughts that needed to be caught and tied down somewhere.

Quite often people ask me for a good birthday cake recipe. I often refer them towards my trusty crowd pleasing chocolate cake recipe. It's moist, keeps for days and can be smothered in either buttercream or ganache to produce excellent results.

It was one particularly hangry night when my brother, Jack sensed the first signs of danger (they were pretty blatant) and in the fear for his and his girlfriend's safety, shoved a peanut butter and three berry jam sandwich in my face whilst I was driving home. Within three bites I was close to my normal and semi pleasant self again. Slash not really, but at least everyone would get out of the car at our destination in one piece.

I was tying to think of some deep and meaningful to say in this post but when I got down to the crux of it I realised I only made this cake because I am somewhat obsessed and had nothing else to do on this Saturday morning. The other girls on the flat had their significant others to distract them but not me, I had cake.
